Empowering the Future of VR/AR Content Consumption Through 5G

5G is the 5th generation of cellular networks which is an upgraded version and successor of 4G LTE network specifically designed to fulfill the exponential growth in connectivity and data, lower latency, and faster speed. New networks provide greater bandwidth enabling faster download speed and fulfilling the high bandwidth demand of AR, also might function as competitors of existing internet service providers for desktop computers or laptops. New networks would not be supported by the current 4G smartphone since it can be used with 5G enabled wireless devices.

Augmented reality (AR) uses a camera on a smartphone to append digital elements to a live view. Augmented reality experiences include examples like game Pokemon Go and Snapchat lenses, whereas, Virtual reality (VR) is a user-interface that implies a complete immersion experience in a digital 3D environment and shuts out the physical world. VR simulates real presence through senses with the help of computer-generated imagery content.

AR-VR environment requires huge amounts of data to be accessed by devices which could be easily resolved through a 5G network by providing shorter setup and download times, immersive video capabilities, shopping experiences beyond stores, and extension of brands.

5G: Augmenting the growth of AR/VR

With the 5th generation of wireless technologies (5G), the complementarity of mobile networks will continue with some degree of emerging services. 10 Gbps speed of fixed networks is being launched in some countries with 1Gbps speed being increasingly common. These competencies will facilitate services in new domains such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).

“Though 72 mobile operators were tested 5G in 2018, 25 of them were anticipated to commence the service in 2019, and another 26 in 2020 (Deloitte,2019). It is projected that by 2025, the United States followed by Europe and the Asia Pacific will be leaders in 5G adoption” - The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

Could AR/VR content consumption be enhanced with the advent of 5G?

Fatpos Global predicts that 5G wireless technology would make AR and VR much faster than before with a greater volume of data flow, easier and accessible to use for various functions other than video gaming. Widespread adoption of 5G is expected which would also empower the future of AR-VR technologies. In addition to this, 5G networks provide exponential growth in connectivity and data, lower latency, and faster speed along with higher bandwidth that further fulfills higher demands of AR/VR for the same. Thus, the 5G network is anticipated to proliferate the future of AR/VR content consumption.
